Are You Selfish?

Why does it seem that so many people in my generation are so selfish?  I have been contemplating this a lot lately as I seem to have been running into a number of people whose actions have been incredibly selfish.  Now talking about it with my Parents they have told me that the 20’s tend to be an inherently selfish age but I would like to disagree with them.  I don’t consider myself selfish (although I suppose some could see me that way…) and I have a number of good friends who are the furthest from selfish anyone could get.

So I don’t know people how ‘bout some of you actually comment on this and let me know what you’re thinking?  Is the generation in their 20’s right now really selfish or is it just me over-reacting to a few isolated incidents?

I tend to think that selfishness is something that we can grow out of - part of the maturing process like figuring out as a little kid that other people are actually real - but not necessarily something that happens very quickly or very well. Teenagers strike me as frequently a pretty selfish group, at least in part because their bodies are doing such wacky things and taking their attention from other people, but i have no such generalizations for other groups. I've run into some pretty selfish and selfless people in a wide variety of age groups...

I also think that it's easy to say that someone's actions were selfish,(and I frequently make such judgements) but without knowing that person's entire perspective, we could be missing some very important information that would reverse our judgement altogether.

Okay, it's nearly 1am and I'm rambling. That's as much discussion as I can offer!

I've been thinking about it more and I think the whole issue comes down to the fact that adolecense is lasting longer in today's society (at least according to social scientists). It's kind of scary to think that a great many people running around in our society shouldn't even / couldn't even care for a chia pet and it's these people who are running around doing stupid selfish things... I think the biggest travesty of all in this situation though is that they seem to be completely unaware of the fact that they are still in adolecent mind=sets. Talk to any of them and they'll be quite insistent that they are 'all grown up' and can take care of themselves.

I hope this makes sense as I just got home from work and am really tired.

lol that makes sense..
& actually I agree with both u & steph.
A lot of my friends, I being in my *cough* late twenties... have a few friends who are extremely selfish- once being a single parent none the less. Which, completely blows my mind, btw.
But I also have a number of friends who truly have grown up at this stage in our lives and are pondering or have achieved a form of "selflessness" on one level or another- hey, we can't all be at the same stage at the same time.
Teenagers, by far the age group of 15-18 are the worst offenders.
Work in retail clothing for awhile, see how many of those little selfish bitches you wanna smack around after a few weeks!! Its unfreakinreal!!
The whole, "adolecense lasting longer" thing rings true as well. If 60 is supposed to be the new 40, with the whole senior sexual revolution, botox and all.. then perhaps 25 is the new 15 (or rather) the new 5. LOL 5 is the most selfish age I know!!
For the most part, I concider myself a rather un-selfish person. I have 3 children after all. lol they kinda demand that they come first *wink* but I will admit, I have my selfish moments.
So, as for the whole 20's being the selfish generation. I have to agree to disagree. I think personally the baby boomers & cougars kinda take that title. They are after all how we coined the phrase "yuppie" and the 80's were all about self indulgence and achievement. People did physical activites not for personal growth and fitness-- they ran for bragging rights and to look hawt in their new sweat bands-- can u believe ppl actually thought THOSE were a fashion statement.
Anyway, I babble.
Catch my drift tho? lol
oh btw hun, could u possibly turn off word verification?? lol I'm a tard. Having issues with these 8 letter combo thingies. Luv ya! even thou u cancelled on me the other night *sigh* LOL
